On the 13 May 2005 the Federal Coalition Government under John
Howard, announced its Tasmanian Forest Package.
Under this deal an additional 73,000 hectares of precious Tarkine
rainforest were protected from logging. This was a huge relief
to those who were expecting the chainsaws to start up again in
the ancient Myrtle forests this summer.
The decision was brought about by the hard work in both Tasmania
and Canberra by members of the Tarkine National Coalition (TNC)
as well as huge pressure from groups and individuals on the mainland
taking the Tarkine's plight to their politicians, their neighbourhood
and the media.
That message was taken up by Canberra and the Minister for the
Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell and his staff worked
diligently to bring about this landmark decision. Great thanks go
to both State and Federal Governments and great thanks to you for
achieving this outcome.
